Katuka/Drug Interactions:
  • Antidiabetic agentsAntidiabetic agents: Based on a study in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rats, Picrorhiza kurroa may lower blood glucose in basal conditions and after a heavy glucose load (1).
  • Antilipemic agentsAntilipemic agents: Based on a study of hyperlipemic mice on a high fat diet, Picrorhiza kurroa may significantly reduce low density lipoprotein (LDL), triglyceride, and total cholesterol levels (3). However, serum HDL levels may not be affected.
  • Antineoplastic agentsAntineoplastic agents: Based on studies in mice and other animals with induced tumors, katuka extract may have antitumor and anticarcinogenic properties (9; 4).
  • Hepatotoxic agentsHepatotoxic agents: Based on studies of hyperlipemic mice, alloxan-treated rats, and other animals, Picrorhiza kurroa may reduce liver weight, serum aspartate transferase (AST), alanine transferase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), glutathione S-transferase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, glutathione, or aniline hydroxylase levels (3; 1; 4; 5).
  • ImmunosuppressantsImmunosuppressants: Based on rats administered with alloxan, Picrorhiza kurroa may inhibit leukopenia (1).
