Interferon

Any of a family of protein compounds that slow the course of viral infection. A group of proteins released by white blood cells and fibroblasts in response to viral infections. Interferons combat viral infections by inhibiting viral replication, spreading to other cells, and activating other immune components, such as macrophages.
